U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, announced about $56 million in total federal funds for Louisiana this past week that range from renovations to the Fort Polk barracks to ongoing Hurricane Katrina recovery projects.

WASHINGTON — Democratic U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond is a known commodity in his hometown of New Orleans and has made a name for himself in Washington, D.C., as the most valuable player of the congressional baseball game for two years running.

But now the freshman congressman is reaching out to the Baton Rouge area and the River Parishes because his newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District will stretch from New Orleans to northern Baton Rouge.

“I’m excited about it,” Richmond said, noting that the district will cover much of the state’s two largest cities, including much of the Interstate 10 corridor and its ports and industry.

“It’s going to be the largest port complex in the world,” Richmond said. “We really hold the key for the future of economic development in Louisiana.”

Facility upgrades at The Port of New Orleans — particularly the arrival of two giant blue cranes earlier this year — have positioned the port to capture its share of the expected swell in container cargo after the 2015 opening of an expanded Panama Canal.

But port officials said there is still more that can be done — including pursuing private investment in the port’s container terminal — to help it take a bigger bite of the 5 million additional containers expected to come into the Gulf of Mexico by 2025...


LaGrange said the Port of New Orleans supports a bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond that would deepen the Mississippi River channel to 50 feet from its mouth to Baton Rouge.



Rep. Richmond Calls On Congress To Work

WASHINGTON - The House met briefly Tuesday in a pro-forma session, continuing to take no votes or consider legislation for a six-week period leading up to the Nov. 6 elections. The Senate is also not doing any legislative business, and the lack of pre-election activity has drawn protests from the Democratic minority in the House and Republican minority in the Senate.

"We have so many important issues facing us, including the fiscal cliff, and to send people home just to campaign is wrong," said Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans.

A budget agreement provision from last year calls for deep cuts in defense and domestic spending early next year, described by Richmond and others in Congress as a "fiscal cliff," unless Congress and the White House cut a deficit reduction deal.

 WASHINGTON - The House voted 216-177 today to restore $10 million of the $16.8 million proposed by President Barack Obama for the first phase of construction under the Louisiana Coastal Area Program.
 
House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee had voted to strip the $16.8 million from an energy and water spending bill. Reps. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson and Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, offered the amendment to restore $10 million of that amount and it easily passed.

The House of Representatives passing legislation today to bring the state about $2 billion more in coastal restoration and hurricane protection funding. The legislation was backed by Louisiana Congressmen Jeff Landry and Cedric Richmond.

The Landry/Richmond Amendment to H.R. 3408, also known as the PIONEERS Act, will increase the offshore drilling revenue given to Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama from $500 million per year to $750 million per year.

Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro on Friday announced his endorsement for State Rep. Cedric Richmond in the race for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

State Rep. Cedric Richmond, who is seeking the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District, raised more money than Republican incumbent Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao in the first three months of 2010.

And for the second quarter in a row, Cao spent a little more than he took in, and his three-month haul of $101,451 was considerably smaller than the $247,775 he received in the last three months of 2009. But, as of March 31, Cao, who is not facing a primary challenge, still had more cash on hand -- $309,000 -- than Richmond, who had $279,000.
